A Week of Breaking Cognitive Biases

Friday, 21 January 2011   |   Creativity Challenges

brainOur minds are mind bogglingly powerful devices.  We can perform complex tasks with ease.  Yet despite all this power we still trip on some very basic tricks.  Cognitive biases are errors in judgment that we can fall into given certain situations.  Some of them are trivial yet others can have a profound impact on our lives.  They also can have a large influence on our ability to think creatively.

On this page you can find about 100 of these cognitive biases listed along with explanations of what they are.

Your challenge this week is to pick 7 of these cognitive biases that you think you may suffer from and then to work out strategies for overcoming them.

  • Pick a different one each day and spend a bit of time reading into what it is.
  • Then think about times when you may have been affected by this cognitive bias.
  • Now think about strategies by which you could avoid this cognitive bias in the future.

Creative thinking is strongly influenced by breaking out of the patterns that we inevitably fall into.  Learning to become aware of potential patterns that we may fall into is just as important.

Remember to check back next Friday when our next Creativity Challenge will be released.
