Memory Challenge

Friday, 20 January 2012   |   Creativity Challenges

An elephant never forgetsNo doubt your just getting back into the swing of things after a couple weeks rest and relaxation (or if your Christmas and New Years was like ours it's been anything but).  This weeks creativity challenge accordingly is useful and fun but not too taxing.  This week we're going to experiment with strategies to improve your memory.  We have to remember things all the time and the better we can do it the easier our lives can be.

Your challenge this week is to come up with different strategies for remembering things.

Use the following to test your memory:

  • Generate 8 random words from our random word generator, study the list for a few seconds then minimise the window or go to another tab.
  • Generate a set of words in our idea generator.  How many words can you successfully remember?
  • Again using our idea generator, generate a list of images (if you don't know what the image represents, hover your mouse over it).
  • Now try with a mixute of words and images.  You could go with a balanced set of words and images or you could use the surprise me button in the middle.
  • Be creative, I'm sure you can think of other ways to create a set of items to remember too.

Now for the fun bit.  Think of all the different aspects you can experiment with.  What techniques can you use to help improve your memory.  Mnemonics are one which we looked at in our creativity game on Monday.  There are others out there and I'm sure you can concoct your own.  Be creative and see where it takes you.

Also, experiment with the situation.  Try recalling the items straight after their hidden, 5 minutes after their hidden, an hour after their hidden etc.  If you recall the objects straight away, then again in an hours time, is it any better than if you leave it and just try in an hour?  What about straight away, then 5 minutes, then an hour?  Is two sets of 4 words any easier or harder than 8 words?  What if you generate 1 set of 4 words to begin with, then another 4 words half and hour after that, then try and recall both sets a further hour after that?

This creativity challenge is quite good as it gives you many different aspects to consider and exeriment with.  Try and come up with as many different approaches as you can.

Remember to check back next Friday when our next Creativity Challenge will be released.
