Mind Challenging Gestalt Art

Friday, 20 August 2010   |   Creativity Challenges

The aim of this challenge is to create a piece of art that challenges the mind in visually pleasing ways. It is believed that we have preferences in how our minds see things.  Gestalt theories of perception try to understand some of these.  You can find out more about these here.  V. S. Ramachandran has attempted to define a set of rules or laws that art follows.  You can read more here but a summary is below.

  • Peak Shift
  • Grouping
  • Contrast
  • Isolation
  • Perceptual Problem solving
  • Symmetry
  • Abhorrence of coincidences/ generic viewpoint
  • Repetition, rhythm and orderliness
  • Balance
  • Metaphor

Create a piece of art which consists of a series of shapes.  These shapes are to be grouped in different ways simultaneously based on the Gestalt theories of perception and styled taking into account the 10 laws above.  You are going to create a visually stunning piece of art by challenging the mind and how it perceives the image.

We are experimenting here with how the mind perceives things.  This is important as great ideas need to be conveyed well if they are to be effective.
